Song for Leslie

A song for Leslie Fish, my gateway into the world of filk music.

by Daniel Kelly – 2025

     G               C
You sang of workers rising,
     D             G
Of women who were free,
     C                 G
To think and be the masters,
     Am         D
of their own destiny,
     C                    G
Not slaves, chattel or trophies,
           C             G
To the fragile pride of man,
     Am              G
But a partner in humanity,
     D               G
Let each succeed who can,

G
Bold star singer,
     C               D
guide us through the void,
     Am              D
Tame your Monster steering,
     C            D
by planet and asteroid,
  C             G
Don’t listen to the voice of those,
     C          D
who’ll never understand,
           Em              G
You are soaring through a multi-verse,
     C          D          G
While they’re tied to the land.

You bid the gods of old return,
And let their faces show,
And poked fun at the piety,
Of churchmen who pretend to know,
Your songs aren’t just for singing,
But for teaching us as well,
To survive in mans apocalypse,
And flourish in that hell,

Kipling never wrote a verse of rhyme,
You couldn’t put to tune,
And you wrote the greatest anthem,
Of our journey to the moon,
Yes you sung of things uncomfortable,
Some truths folks wish to hide,
You met their rage with confidence,
For truth won’t be denied.
