Jesus was a Stonemason

Jesus was a carpenter,
           C          G
That’s the story I was told,
     D               G
I never thought to question,
     C                D
As a lad of ten years old,
     G               Em
But now I know the ignorant,
     D                 G
Speak as loudly as the wise,
     C               G
And it takes some dedication,
     D               G
To sort the truth from lies,

I pictured a young Jesus,
With a chisel and a saw,
Making chairs and tables,
Like his father had before,
But Nazareth’s a dusty place,
You scarce will find a tree,
Her Buildings have been made of stone,
For many centuries.

Translation is a tricky thing,
And someone got it wrong,
A Tekton is a builder,
In the Greek there all along,
So Jesus was a stone mason,
The truth was always there,
The secret of Freemasonry,
In the compass and the square.

So when Jesus used the corner stone
As the basis of his talks,
He was not being theoretical,
But drew from the life he walked,
He understood how towers,
Could be made from singles stones,
Each one worked with precision,
For none could stand alone.

So it isn’t then surprising,
That Peter was the rock,
To build the future church upon,
Instead of a wooden block,
But the story makes me wonder,
What else has been a lie,
And closely held tradition,
Will be abandoned by and by
