The Seven Lady Godivas

by Daniel Kelly - 2026 (based on Dr. Seuss)

      G           C
On the fifteenth of May,
      G         D
In the regular way,
      G                        C    G
It being around ten hundred and sixty,
      C           G
Lord Godiva he said,
      C           G
To his daughters (unwed),
      G           C
I’m off to Hastings to
            D     G
Battle the French see,

He got on his horse,
A new one of course,
Daughters they waved goodbye sadly,
But before he passed gate,
He suffered the fate,
Of a knight thrown
to his death badly,

The daughters they vowed,
They wouldn’t be wooed,
Till the secrets of horse they uncovered,
Each one on a page,
Would right words like sage,
Before they could
then be unflowered,

Look no gift horse in mouth,
Won Teenie her troth,
And the marriage it was consummated,
Put cart not before horse,
Did Dorcas endorse,
So long for Peeping Dick
Had she waited.

Arabella led Brutus,
Down to the trough,
But to drink there she could not make him,
The secret she’d found,
So she asked Harry round,
And quickly a man,
She did make him,

Don’t change horses mid-stream,
Granted Mitzi her dream,
After much nautical experimentation,
A horseshoe for luck,
Allowed Lulu her pluck,
Which left only
two daughters waiting,

Paint your horse blue,
Is what Gussie did do,
To solve her frustrated conundrum,
And Hedwig the last,
Had her loliness Pass,
When she locked the gate
After the horse’d run,

So this was the tale,
Of seven ladies sans vail,
The work of the good Suess the doctor,
But it’s not made for kids,
Too saucy by quids,
And it may well land you
in the dock sir,
